ZONE 6 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
DAY 4: Friday, December 12 2008.
SEMI-FINAL STAGE OF THE AFRICAN ZONE 6 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.
Harare Stars (Zimbabwe) and Cigma (SouthAfrica) were denied a place in tomorrow’s (December13) women’s final by Kutlwano and Mafolofolo (both from Botswana) at today’s semi-finals at the Tongaat Sports Centre.
In the first semi-final clash in the women’s section, Kutlwano were too powerful for Zimbabwe’s Harare Stars as they eased past them in straight sets (3-0) with out breaking into a sweat. However, Botswana’s number 1 women’s team, Mafolofolo did not have it all their own way against South Africa’s top team, Cigma who fought back after losing the first set (25-18) to level matters
(1-1),after capturing the second set with a (25-21) score line.
Far too many unforced errors put paid to Cigma’s chances of upsetting the tournament favourites who wrapped up proceedings by grabbing the 3rd and 4th sets (25-19; 25-21) to set up a final show down with compatriots, Kutlwano on Saturday.
MEN’S SEMI-FINAL CLASHES, Friday December 12 2008
In one of the best matches witnessed in the current Zone 6 club championship, Libere (South Africa) kept their country’s hopes alive of making into the final when they over powered the high riding Kutlwano of Botswana in straight sets (25-22; 25-20; 25-22) before a lively crowd.
Playing as a closely knit unit, Liberte fought tigerishly giving away little at the net and unleashing their wrath on the Botswana blockers. Ricky Govender who was flawless in attack tortured the visitors every time he connected with Ryaan “Spitz” Lahldas’s crafty sets.
Undeterred by Kutlwano’s attempts to unsettle them, Liberte soldiered on to thrash Kutlwano . Liberte meet BDF6 in the final. Tournament favourites, BDF6 beat Zimbabwe’s Churchill Bulldogs by 3 sets to 1 in the other semi-final.
