Facts

A team can touch the ball three times on its side of the net. The usual pattern is a dig (an underarm pass made with the forearms), a set (an overhead pass made with the hands) and a spike (the overhead attacking shot). The ball is served into play. Teams can also try to block the opponent’s spike as it crosses the net. A block into your own court counts as one of your three touches in beach volleyball, but not in volleyball.

National Beach Volleyball Series begins at Port Elizabeth’s Hobie Beach (April 10-12 2009)

Port Elizabeth’s picturesque Hobie Beach was the venue for Volleyball South Africa’s opening leg of the R40 000 National Beach Volleyball Series over the Easter weekend. African Club Championship, Cairo, Egypt (April 22 to May 2 2009)

Zone 6 club champions, Liberte of Tongaat are South Africa’s only entry in this year’s (2009) African Club Championship to be staged in Cairo, Egypt under the auspices of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB). Although the Tongaat team romped home in the Zone 6 final against BDF6 of Botswana, they do realize that the challenges that they will face on the continental platform will be far greater as it will be a new experience for more than half the team.

Second Training Camp for SA Men’s Team (March 25-29 2009)

Volleyball South Africa has made its intentions quite clear that losing the World Championship Qualifier in Cameroon later this year was not an option for Head Coach Hamid El Wassimy and his charges. To this end the National Federation has made an early start by preparing the men’s team who arguably have the best possible chance of qualifying for a place in a global event for the first time since South Africa was re-admitted to international sport in 1992. The team has met for the second time this year for a week long training camp under the watchful eye of internationally renowned Egyptian coach, Hamid El Wassimy at the Western Cape Sport School Academy. Coach Wassimy is assisted by Capetonian, Loot Groenewald who holds a FIVB Level 2 coaching certificate.
